There are so many weapons used in martial arts that it would be nearly impossible to list them all. We’ll talk about all kinds here, including things like
- Hand weapons
- Staffs and pole arms
- Throwing weapons
- Ropes, whips, and chains
- Projectile weapons
Weapons are an important part of your martial arts training and can help you to understand better how to think during a fight. While not all martial arts use them, it is good to recognize the limitations of the human body and how to use what is available to further be able to defend oneself.
Isn’t it cool to see a martial artist like Jackie Chan use just about anything he puts his hands on as a weapon? I mean, come on, the guy can use a freaking picnic bench or ladder – even a dish rag – to ruin somebody’s day! This all comes from training with so many different types of weapons that it just becomes easy to assess the situation at hand and find what’s available on the spot. Yes, I know movies are choreographed, but the phenomenon is real (and he can really do that stuff).
You might not want to use everything out there, and there are many weapons that just don’t work well for me, either. You’ll definitely have strengths and weaknesses when it comes to different arms, just as you have them with different hand and foot techniques. But fear not, the more you try different weapons, the faster you learn how to use new ones and the better you get at improvising in a pinch. And isn’t that really the point – to be able to defend yourself and others, regardless of your situation and surroundings?
